St. Mark’s Church
Sigurd Lewerentz
Björkhagen, Stockholm · 1960
Designed by Sigurd Lewerentz after winning the 1956 competition and completed in 1960, St. Mark’s Church is built almost entirely of dark brick, laid without cutting a single unit. Every dimension is worked out so that whole bricks meet at corners, openings and vaults, and the heavy mortar joints become part of the texture. Light enters sparingly through small, deep openings, and the interior is shaped by a slow progression from threshold to altar. The building shows how far an architect can push a single material and its joints
